Info
The centers of an American creative industry, aware of its responsibility to make the world a better place, are located along an axis connecting New York, Chicago, and L.A. With intelligent interviews and breathtaking illustrations GOWEST! introduces sixty prominent representatives from the fields of advertising, architecture, art, design, fashion, and photography. However, artists like Terence Koh – who inspired Lady Gaga’s quote, “When I’m around Terence I just want to poop out ideas nonstop” (ArtForum) – refuse to be restricted to one sphere of interest only. GOWEST!, a brilliant realization of the theme by Meiré and Meiré, from the first to the last page offers a fascinating panorama of new horizons.

  • STUDIO. The Studio is the World is the Studio

First-Ever Exhibition of the Work of German Artist Norbert Tadeusz in California at ESMoA, June 7-September 27, 2015 STUDIO is a collaboration between the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art and ESMoA

April 13, 2015 (El Segundo, California) – The work of Norbert Tadeusz (1940-2011) will be exhibited for the first time in Los Angeles and on the West Coast at ESMoA. The art laboratory’s experience #17, STUDIO, is a collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, (LACMA) and the art laboratory in El Segundo, ESMoA. The retrospective spans the entire career of the prolific painter and draftsman and presents about 30 paintings of mostly monumental scale.

STUDIO focuses on the representations of Tadeusz’s studio and the artist’s own oeuvre.  The art experience considers the trope of the artist studio in art history and examines the notions of the studio in general: as a place that frames the artist’s relation to reality; as a space both public, private and deeply personal; as a set and a setting; as a circus and a stage; as reality…and as fiction.

Experience STUDIO, the work of Norbert Tadeusz, at ESMoA in El Segundo, California with an opening talk on June 7, 2015. The exhibition will run through September 27, 2015.

Tadeusz was among the first artists to study with the legendary Joseph Beuys in Dusseldorf in the early 1960s, a respected professor in his own right who taught at prestigious art academies in Dusseldorf, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Braunschweig, and elsewhere. A contemporary of internationally renowned artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, Georg Baselitz and Jorg Immendorf, Tadeusz was associated with German figurative painting of the 1980s – a.k.a.,Neo-Expressionism or The New Wild. To his credit, Tadeusz always resisted categorization and insisted on remaining an outsider. Indeed, though he is represented in major museum collections and exhibited widely in Germany and Europe, he is virtually unknown in the U.S. ESMoA is both pleased and excited to introduce this exceptional painter to Southern California at its first-ever art experience devoted to a single artist.

STUDIO invites visitors into the world of the artist’s studio, a recurring subject throughout Tadeusz’s 50-year career. Arrangements of otherwise ordinary studio objects such as stretcher frames, coffee cans for paint brushes, random cables, and rolled-up canvases appear alongside fascinating architectural views of the studio space, with skylight shadows forming geometric shapes on the walls, or theatrically staged scenarios of bodies depicted from extreme angles. The artist’s powerful, intensively colored and at times highly complex compositions reshuffle and reinterpret traditional motifs such as the still life, the nude study, portraiture or genre painting. Reaching from quasi-abstract depictions of basic studio matter to spectacular circus scenes, Tadeusz obsessively mastered his medium in both smaller and monumental scales.

STUDIO is organized by ESMoA in collaboration with LACMA. The exhibition is curated by LACMA exhibition associate Nana Bahlmann and is accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue The World is the Studio is the World(Daab Media), with contributions by LACMA’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, Michael Govan, as well as Bahlmann; Bernhard Zünkeler, Director of artlab21; and the artist’s widow, Petra Lemmerz. STUDIO is part of an initiative by LACMA to partner with communities and organizations in all five districts of Los Angeles County – making ESMoA a perfect fit.
